M O O N, that Spells Moon
Ever wondered what life on the moon might be like? Life on Mars? Well, keep wondering. It’s virtually impossible for a planetary body other than Earth — in our solar system — to support any kind of life because Earth is the only planet with a fully functioning magnetosphere.
That’s the ball of energy around the Earth that filters out solar radiation. I wrote an entire article about this phenomenon, which you can read here.
Then, I got to thinking…. Is there a way to live on the moon? There might be, but likely for only short periods of time for the first few decades…maybe, even the first few centuries.
Theoretically, engineers can begin building a temporary and artificial moon base, most of which would have to be underground in order to offset the solar radiation. The moon does not have a functional magnetosphere to repel solar radiation, so, to maintain safety and grow some food, and have real breathable air, the moon base would have to be mostly underground.
That, of course, means sending the men, robots, and supplies to the moon. First, remote controlled back hoes dig out the hole. Other machines can place the foundation. Finally, whatever shuttle carries the crew has to be a shuttle that can be dismantled and turned into the first lab. Naturally, there must be another shuttle on stand by to pick that crew up after the…
